Fabric Dying

An essential way for the Viking age people to show off their wealth was decorating their clothing with bright colors. Many people think that the Vikings and other early Medieval Europeans lived in a dark period shrouded in mud, leather and disease. This is quite opposite from the truth, and we take great care in dying our outfits with natural materials available to the Vikings.

Hand Sewing

Knowledge of creating garments and fixing them when worn was vital for the Vikings. We make all of our own outfits by hand, with appropriate techniques. This is what gives our costumes an authentic look and feel.

Jewelry Making

Vikings often adorned themselves and their families with precious metals and elegant beads that they plundered or traded for. We’ve led several classes on glass bead making as this was a vibrant part of anyone’s adornment during the 9th – 11h centuries.

Woodwork

Wood was the most common material for the Iron Age Norse on mainland Scandinavia. It’s what was used to build ships, homes, heat buildings full of wooden furniture, and even provided an excellent option for game boards and pieces.

viking leatherwork

Leatherwork

Another abundant and frequently used material by the Vikings was leather. Our shoes, belts, pouches, and even sword sheathes are made from different types of leather. Being able to work with leather at the basic level is necessary even for the modern Viking.
